STIEBEL ELTRON Accelera 300 80G Electric Water Heater Review

STIEBEL ELTRON Accelera 300 80G Electric Water Heater
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
We did a lot of research when determining what type of hot water heater we wanted. Our main goal was to be able to disconnect the tankless coil on our oil boiler. Why disconnect the tankless? First of all, it belched fumes into our back yard all year long. Nothing would make me madder than trying to enjoy the back yard on a warm summer's day and having to smell fumes because the darned boiler came on to heat up residential hot water. The other thing I don't like about tankless boilers is that they are very inefficient. That's reason number 2 for switching hot water systems - to save money. Third of all, using less fossil fuel is good for the environment and that's important to us. Some friends were skeptical when we said we were getting an electric hot water heater, but I don't think they understand how this thing works. It's not your father's electric hot water heater. You might wonder how a device that uses, for example, a joule of energy could possibly produce 2.5 joules of heat. But it is possible if the device is merely moving heat from point A to point B. That's what the Stiebel Eltron does, and does very well. It does have a backup heating element for situations in which the compressor is not able to provide enough heat by itself, but most of the time, the heating element is not used.
So how does it work? Great! The water is piping hot and, owing to the large 80 gallon capacity, there is always plenty of hot water even for our 5-person family. It wasn't cheap, but it is a qualified purchase for the $1500 federal energy efficiency tax credit. So whatever you pay for it, you'll get $1500 back at tax time.
We positioned ours in the basement, close to the boiler, so that it can use some of the standby-loss heat that the boiler would otherwise waste. This does bring up one thing that you should be aware of - this unit will indeed make your basement colder. It's basically like having a window air conditioner running in your basement. Our basement isn't frigid, because the basement walls, being as they are underground, really buffer temperatures anyway. But it's definitely a little chillier down there than it was before we installed the Stiebel.
As for the bottom line... well first of all, don't underestimate how much it will cost to install this unit. We had a certified installer perform the work for us and the bill came to around $6500. After the tax credit, it's more like $5000. We were able to get a zero percent energy efficiency loan sponsored by the state of MA (I've been told other states have similar programs), so we're paying about $50 per month to own it. So are we saving $50 per month in fuel oil? Probably... it's a little hard to say just yet, as we've only had it for a few months. We won't really know for sure until we've had it for a year or more and can compare our year to year oil usage. One thing I will say though, is that the hit to our electric bill has been negligible. We really haven't noticed any increase in our electric bill at all. Maybe a couple bucks. We calculated that the unit will pay for itself in about 6 years... time will tell if those calculations are accurate.
I think it will really start to pay for itself next spring. I plan on turning the oil boiler off as soon as it warms up in the spring and not turning it on again until it gets cold again in autumn. Zero oil usage all summer! (Side note, an oil guy once told me that you shouldn't turn the boiler off for extended periods of time because the gaskets might crack... others I've spoken to say that's poppycock. It sounds pretty doubtful to me, and frankly, I don't really trust oil salesmen, so I plan on turning it off next summer and we'll see what happens).
So in summary... no regrets so far. Works great, plenty of hot water, barely a blip on the electric bill. Gotta love it.

I don't own this extractor but I do own another product from Mytee(the M-12). I have to say thier is less then average. Cross your fingers nothing goes wrong with your product because their service is crappy. They will not give you a new one if the product is defective out of the box. They have so many excuses why (like they don't have anymore in stock). B.S.!!!! Mine broke twice already within 30 days and I have to drive the damn unit 2 hours away to have it ship back mytee to be repaired. They try to blame me for not know how to use the extractor. That made me even more mad. Wait a week and lose many jobs and money. Mytee, get your act together!!!! By the way, my M-12 cost me almost 3k :(

I did quite a bit of research, got seveal estimates and with most charging $800-$1000 for labor decided to do it myself. I was able to pick up the B&W M440T6FBN from a plumbing contractor locally and got a good price, (he even delivered it!) I'm pretty handy around the house but the biggest concern I had was that my HTW is in the attic but called a couple of friends over and went w/o a problem. Easy to install, pilot lite was easy to light and have no issues as all. Unit seems to have a lot of insulation, ceratinly more than the old one. Plenty of hot water and am looking for some energy savings since my last one was 21 years old!

Navien NR-240 Condensing Tankless Water Heater, Natural Gas Review

Navien NR-240 Condensing Tankless Water Heater, Natural Gas
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Our water heater (30-gallon) went out (started leaking) mid-week... I called our plumbing contractor to see if we could install a tankless unit. He said it would take a few days to get one, but we got it by Saturday (struggled through with cold showers). Anyway, after he arrived with the Navien NR-240, I jumped right online to check them out... and saw some "skeptical" reviews, and was hesitant... but needed hot water, so I let him continue the install. I mentioned what I saw about 1" gas line minimum, new gas meter, etc. ALL NONSENSE. The unit only has a 3/4" input anyway. We only have a 3/4" to our house. Our unit works FINE with our 3/4" main gas line, and we also have forced-air heating, gas dryer, and stove... ALL work just fine. The facts: The heater does take a "little" longer to get the HOT water to the faucet if you have low-flow outlets like we do (you need 1/2 GPM minimum to start it up)... but once it gets there (less than a minute for the LONG run to our shower) it will not run out--EVER... you can take a 6-hour long shower if you want to... AND, everyone else can be running hot water also... you can't over-draw this unit... wow! Cons: If you use the kitchen sink to rinse something off, and turn on the single-handle faucet like we have, you most likely turn it on where it also calls for hot water... but the hot water won't get to you before you are finished rinsing your item off... you can hear the operating fan come on (which uses some energy). That is about it for CONS. The exhaust up to the roof is PLASTIC! This thing is SO efficient, the air coming out of it is barely warm. ALL of the energy goes into heating the water. I never yell at my wife for using all the hot water up anymore... peace in the household!

LAING Autocirc Pump with Timer and Cord Review

LAING Autocirc Pump with Timer and Cord
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Installed this pump in three steps. First, installed a 115-volt outlet under the sink that was farthest from the water heater, a distance of about 50 feet. There were three other sinks and two showers all hooked to the hot water pipe that ran between this farthest sink and the water heater. Second, I insulated the hot water pipes leading from the water heater to this farthest sink. Most of these hot water pipes were located in a suspended ceiling. If the pipes were in a wall, I ignored trying to insulate them, figuring the wall was enough insulation. Third, I installed the pump under the sink. I set the timer to operate whenever I plan on using hot water in any of the sinks (i.e., 0600-2400). I have had the pump installed for about a year and appreciate it every day. When the water at the sink cools to 85 degrees, the pump cycles "on." When the water temperature reaches 95 degrees at the sink, the pump cycles "off." The water from the hot water side gets pumped to the cold water side so that the cold water is about 90 degrees, but that water cools rapidly. When the cold water faucet is turned "on," the cooler water quickly gets to the faucet. This pump is perfect for my needs.

Lime-Life Water Heater Element 4500 Watts x 240 Volts Review

Lime-Life Water Heater Element 4500 Watts x 240 Volts
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
These are very good. I installed quite a few in apartments and they last quite well in hard water. If you use a lower wattage element in the lower position on a 2 element water heater they will last many years even if the lime builds up to cover the element. It pays to use an adapted wet vac to remove the lime buildup when replacing elements. Always use low watt density , folded back elements like these to get good element life and reduce noise of boiling water in the water heater.

I bought this thinking it would work for a sink or small shower w/ water saver head on it. Wrong! it won't put out "hot" or even Warm unless the faucet is almost off at .5 gpm(.4 is the min reqd to activate the unit).... What the heck is .5 gpm useful for? I bought it because it is listed as 2.5 gpm. don't go off that. the factory rep told me these are intended for folks in warmer states with warm ground water. But if the water is that warm comeing out of the ground I don't think I would need a HEATER:)

American Water Heaters GH-90N Hybrid Natural Gas Residential Water Heater Review

American Water Heaters GH-90N Hybrid Natural Gas Residential Water Heater
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased this product Oct, 2010. I tried getting a tankless water heater but the gas BTU is not enough in my house, so I was recommended this product.
The first two month, I did not see any problem. Dec 31, 2011, I see error message 08.
The product manual describes all error message and the solutions, but I could not understand how to fix the issue. I plugged off and on the power line for several times, but the error message did not disappear. I turned off the system an hour, and turned on, then started working as usual.
Jan 15, 2011, I changed the mode from ECO mode to Boost mode because my friends visit my house. Error 08 was displayed.
I called a company which installed the product. They called to manufacture and got information to fix the issue. The solution was that power off the water heater and use all the water in the tank, and power on. After the solution, Error 37 appeared. Error 37 means "Not enough water flow". I waited for an hour, but saw the same error message.
Jan 25, the problem was fixed by a company which was referred by American Water Heater support team with no cost becase of the warranty. The warranty covers only the first year. WATCH OUT.

Indus-Tool Cozy Electric Foot Warming Pad #FW Review

Indus-Tool Cozy Electric Foot Warming Pad #FW
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this last winter (2004), despite the many reviews warning about the odor emitted, and boy, do I regret it! I thought I could tough it out; most people said the horrible skunk smell would GO AWAY after some time, and, to me, warm feet would be worth a temporary annoyance. As some have suggested, I plugged this in the garage first, to try to burn off much of the odor before bringing it inside. I left it plugged in a large part of the day for about two weeks. The smell was definitely horrible, but I guess because our garage is very large, and far from airtight, the full extent of the noxious odor was not obvious, until I moved it into the office. In just a few minutes, the entire HOUSE smelled like a charred skunk. But it was more than a smell, it was a TASTE as well, and we coughed quite a bit if we tried to stay in the office with it, and I got a horrible headace. I turned it off and decided to give it another week in the garage, this time I left it plugged in all the time. The second try in the office was JUST as bad as the first, and at this point the mat had been "burning off" its smell for over 3 weeks! I stubbornly left the mat in the office for a week, forcing myself to use it, trying to adjust to or ignore the skunk that was attacking my nose with every breath. After all, it REALLY DID keep my feet nice and toasty warm. Finally I'd had it, I couldn't take it anymore. The headaches and permeating odor were simply not worth it. I took the thing and threw it in the garage, unplugged, where it remains to this day. I only wish I had been realistic and sent the thing back when I had the chance. It is an absolute nightmare. By the way, the reason I thought to write this review today is because when I sat down at my desk I was reminded of this mat , as I am every day, because I smelled the lingering, embedded stink of burning SKUNK that it left behind. And this is October 2005, nearly a year later and several carpet cleanings and after it briefly occupied this space. Does it warm your feet? Definitely. But you've been warned, it isn't worth it!

As anyone who's been out in the cold knows, toasty feet go a long way toward keeping the rest of you warm. That's why using an Indus-Tool FW Cozy Foot warmer can help reduce your indoor heating costs. At only 90 watts, one of these units tucked under a desk allows you to turn the building thermostat down, thereby saving you money. The warmer is less costly to use than a space heater, and safer, too, as there are no exposed heating coils or carbon monoxide emissions. ETL listed. Lifetime warranty.--Josh Dettweiler
What's in the BoxFoot-warmer pad, power cord

Five Tips for Buying a HeaterChoosing a space heater is a matter of sifting through a bewildering array of types, power ratings, and fuel sources. Let's break it down a little to make the process easier.

What are the different types of space heaters?
Radiant heaters emit infrared radiation that directly warms the objects in front of the heaters (rather than the surrounding air). If you only need heat by a desk or in a small section of a room, a radiant heater is quiet and will use very little power.
Forced-air heaters use a fan to blow air that has been warmed by metal or ceramic heating elements. A forced-air heater is appropriate for quickly heating up a small- to medium-sized room, but can be noisy.
Convection heaters draw cold air from the floor; the air is warmed by heating coils and emitted from the top of the heater. A convection heater is appropriate for quickly heating up a small- to medium-sized room, but also can be noisy.
Radiators work by heating oil enclosed in a reservoir, gradually heating the surrounding air. If heating speed isn't an issue, you might want to opt for a radiator. These are extremely quiet and effective--perfect for bedrooms.

Should I buy an electric or a combustion model? If you want a heater that will be available in emergencies, or that can heat areas larger than a single room, choose a "combustion" model--one that is powered by a gas or fuel like propane, kerosene, natural gas, or diesel. Which fuel type you choose depends largely on convenience and local availability. For example, diesel would be appropriate for a heater you take with you on long car trips.

How powerful a heater do I need?Heaters are rated by BTU, which stands for British Thermal Unit (the amount of heat needed to heat one pound of water by 1 degree F). To find out how many BTU you need:
Calculate the volume of the space to be heated by multiplying square footage by height.
Multiply that number by 4 if your insulation is poor, 3 if it's average, or 2 if it's good.
The resulting number is a ballpark figure for how many BTU you'll need.
Do space heaters cost a lot to operate? As a general rule, electric space heaters are more expensive to use than combustion models. To ensure energy efficiency, a thermostat is a must-have feature for any heater. For radiant heaters, models with a 360 degree heating surface can heat larger spaces. If you need a forced-air heater, models with ceramic elements tend to be more efficient.

Are space heaters a fire hazard?Space heaters are implicated in about 25,000 residential fires every year. To ensure proper safety, always follow the manufacturer's usage instructions and fill out the warranty card to receive informational updates from the manufacturer. Also, look for extra safety features such as an automatic shutoff switch that can shut down the unit if, for example, it gets upended. In addition, choose a model where the heating element is adequately enclosed within the unit.

Leak Frog LF001 Water Alarm Review

Leak Frog LF001 Water Alarm
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've had one of these for well over a year. Originally put it in my basement next to the water heater. We had had problems with water in the past (water softener issues, some rain seepage, etc) but we managed to repair those problems. Never heard anything from my little Leakfrog until a couple of nights ago.
In the middle of the night, I heard beeping coming from somewhere. It was enough to wake both me and my dog. Mind you, my bedroom is on the second floor, and the Leakfrog is in the basement. So it's plenty loud.
Finally figured out that it was the Leakfrog coming from the basement. The flexible water line going from the water supply to the water heater had started leaking. I doubt it had been leaking for more than an hour or so; there was only a small wet spot on the floor. So I shut off the valve to the heater and went back to bed. 10 hours and $10 in replacement parts later, it was fixed. Mind you, in those 10 hours, the water on the floor had completely dried, that's how little water it took to activate the alarm.
Had I not had the Leakfrog, it could have been weeks (and possibly causing substantial damage to the water heater or other items in the basement) before I would have noticed the leak. I highly recommend this for anyone that has a potential for leakage that could possibly go unnoticed.
