(More customer reviews)The unit we bought was actually the 195. I strongly recommend against buying this unit to replace an existing hot water tank. It demands far more gas supply than typical tank units, and by the time you do all the gas plumbing rework needed to make the thing work, it is more expensive than will ever be recovered. It needs 145,000 Btu for the 145 model, and 195,000 Btu for the 195 model. If you have a typical older gas meter it's probably too small. The unit is a pig. It needs to be the first in line to get gas, and you will probably end up running new gas supply lines for it. The unit is tempermental and Grand Hall recommends that only "Experts" with this unit install it. That's another way of saying it isn't really road ready, and the installer has to fuss with it to get it to work right. Unless you have someone experienced with fussing with this unit, you are in for a lot of expense. I bought this unit and I regret having done so. We literally wasted over $5,000 getting this thing in and operating. That's $5,000 over and above the cost of the unit and what we thought it would cost to install it. We estimate our total expenses for this fiasco at something like $10,000. I could run a really crappy tank model for a long time for $10,000. Even with tax credits its still a financial disaster.
And don't get sucked in on that "Eternal" bit. What they don't tell you is that when they say 14.5 gallons per minute or 19.5 gallons per minute that is predicated on cold water coming in at 90 degrees. No place has cold water supplied at 90 degrees. By the time you factor in the actual temperature the water comes in at, your gallons per minute will be something in the 2 to 5 range. Then they will tell you that you need two of these puppies, and that puts you back to the gas and Btu problem. Don't get sucked in. Buy a good old fashioned tank model, and call it a day. You'll be vastly better off.
