Review a water heater pan? Ok..... folks, it works. Much easier to install at the time you install the water heater, than try to do it retroactively. Very important item to have if a leak from your water heater would cause water damage to your house, as it did mine. I regret not having this earlier.

Reliance 9000029-005 29-Inch Aluminum Anode Rod Review

Reliance 9000029-005 29-Inch Aluminum Anode Rod
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased this quite awhile ago and never got around to reviewing it. This sacrificial rod came well packaged and easy to use. The most difficult thing was removing the old rod. Actually, it was a rusted head by the time I removed it. The rod itself had long since corroded into a brown mush on the bottom of the water heater.
Every homeowner needs a good socket set of varying sizes. If you don't already have one, I recommend purchasing or borrowing a "breaker bar." You will need to remove the old rod (or what's left of it) and believe me, it may not come off easily. The socket size I used was 1-1/16 so you might want to acquire one of those as well. Make sure you get someone to keep the water heater from moving while removing the old bolt. The last thing you want to do is to break a water line.
I have yet to remove this rod, but it will have to be replaced eventually. They are supposed to sacrifice themselves so you don't have to buy a new water heater every few years.

Franke : HT200 Heating Tank and Connector for Little Butler
Average Reviews:

I agree with Mr Vaughn. This is my third replacement in 5 years. The first failed after 2 years, leaking and destroying my brand new cabinet floor. This one is now disintegrating and white material in now in the hot water. Zero customer service from the mfgr. Thanks to Mr Vaughn's review I will search for a replacement from another manufacturer. By the way, i am dissatisfied with all the Franke products (deep double ss sink that stains like crazy, expensive designer faucet that broke in less than 2 years, and the infernal Butler) that I installed in my $100,000 kitchen.Franke : Triflow Series TFT389 Traditional FaucetFranke : Triflow Series TFT400 Traditional Faucet

Evolve Showerheads SS-1002CP-US Ladybug Water-Saving Shower-Head Adapter, Chrome Polish Review

Evolve Showerheads SS-1002CP-US Ladybug Water-Saving Shower-Head Adapter, Chrome Polish
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Simply put, it works. It also seems a little magical. How can a little mechanical device stop the water flow when the water gets hot enough? No idea, but it does it.
Attaching this to our shower was easy - just a little plumber's tape gave it a snug, water-tight fit.
Conceptually at first, it was hard to figure out how to use the thing. Was it on a timer? Could we adjust the threshold for what it thinks is 'hot?' The answer to both of these questions is no. If you just turn your shower to 'warm' the Evolve Showerhead Adapter won't shut the flow off. Its threshold for what it considers 'hot' might be warmer than you expect. It's not set to wait for the water to be scaldingly hot by any means, but the first time I tested it after I installed it, I thought it was broken when actually I just hadn't given it enough hot water.
When it hits the threshold for heat, it cuts the flow of the shower back to a trickle. It's very clear even if you're not looking at it that it's done so, because the sound of the water flow clearly changes. Remember, it doesn't stop the water, it just slows it way down. Once you're in the shower, just pull the attached cord and water flow resumes to normal. Pretty simple.
I found one quirk: our shower has 2 showerheads (fed from 1 common control panel), and we attached this adapter to only one of them. Sometimes the Evolve Showerhead Adapter gets confused if the water pressure changes drastically - like if we turn the 2nd showerhead on. When that happens, sometimes the adapter cuts off the water as if it just tripped its heat threshold, but pulling the cord won't restore the flow. The only fix is to turn the water to that showerhead off and then back on. Not a big deal, but it happens. I've never had the adapter cut off the flow for no good reason however. Now that we're used to the quirks of the adapter, it's part of our routine.
Ultimately, you have to wonder, how long does it take to pay for itself? I really have no idea. I don't feel like this adapter has revolutionized our water bill. I have to imagine that, long term, it's worth it, but I didn't see any noticeable reduction in my water or gas bill the month after the adapter was installed. But if you're going to buy this, it's probably not the only thing you're doing to reduce your impact on the environment, right? Hopefully this is just one of many things you do, and I do believe that it helps.
I recommend that people buy this for any shower they use on a daily basis - but I don't think it would be worth it to install one on every showerhead in your house (if you have more than one, of course) if they're not all regularly used.
Final notes: it's nicely manufactured. We got the chrome adapter and it's a nice, simple, smooth, industrial piece of metal that feels solid. I have no fear that it's about to break or spring a leak. When you install it, it adds an inch or two to the length of the feeder pipe, so depending on the angle of the pipe that feeds your showerhead, expect that your showerhead will extend a little lower or higher or further than before (which may be a good or bad thing depending on your situation). Finally, if you have guests use your shower, don't forget to tell them how it works!

We have been using tankless water heaters for domestic use for years. This unit has worked perfectly for our design of snow melt systems. It is easily plumbed into the system and with it's immediate heating design allows us to apply just the right amount of high heat at just the right time during the snow fall for no accumulation or ice and a high efficient system. Our customers are extremely pleased with their systems this season in these repeated blizzards in Colorado.

Stiebel Eltron DHC-E 10 Tankless Electric Water Heater With ScaldGuard Thermostat Review

Stiebel Eltron DHC-E 10 Tankless Electric Water Heater With ScaldGuard Thermostat
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've put up for years with having to run the hot water at my kitchen sink for 3 minutes before I got hot water, which was actually only warm. I live in a house where the water heater, powered by propane, is about 40 feet from the kitchen. I installed the DHCE-10 in a weekend myself, it fit on the back wall right under the sink. The hardest part was running the 40 amp circuit over a 60 foot run for the power. Plumbing wasn't bad, this unit uses the cold water for the inlet, I turned off the hot water valve under the sink and capped it off and teed into the cold water line. The outlet side of the heater is teed, one to the hot water inlet on the faucet, one to the dishwasher.
Before having the DHCE-10 I would have to keep the propane heater turned almost as high as it would go so the water would be hot at the kitchen sink. There was a fair amount of temperature drop over a 40 foot run in a slab foundation. After powering up the DHCE-10, I had 120 degree water at my kitchen sink in 3 seconds, amazing. The first thing I did was turn my propane heater down to low, just warm enough for showers in the baths, which are in close proximity to the propane heater. Another benefit is my dishwasher is now cleaning the dishes more effectively with 120 degree water which is what is recommended.
As for the heater itself, it is well constructed, compact, simple and easy to set. There is a dial on the front which adjusts the water temperature from off to 125 degrees. The unit is self limiting to a max of 125. The ambient temperature of the water going into the unit is 50 degrees, (I live in the South, test done in winter), my flow rate is 1.3 gallons per minute at my sink. The unit heats the water instantly to 120 degrees. The unit only consumes power when the water is turned on, there is a flow detection switch that powers up the unit when water flows through it. It turns off instantly when the water flow stops. Can't get any more efficient than that. If you live in an area where you're ambient water temperature is lower, it may be necessary to reduce the flow at the faucet to achieve the desired outlet temperature, or install one of Stiebel Eltron's larger or smaller units, they have a variety of sizes depending on your needs. The hot water temperature is relative to your flow rate and the ambient temperature of your cold water. The Stiebel Eltron web site has graphs and recommendations for your area.
I've been using the unit for three months now, I've monitored my propane usage, it has dropped dramatically. Prior to installing the unit we would turn on the hot water at the sink for washing hands and rinsing dishes, it usually didn't run long enough to actually get any hot water but it did run long enough to cause the propane heater to cycle on to reheat the water in the tank. I've seen no appreciable rise in my electric bill so far. I would expect the unit to pay for itself over it's lifespan.
I highly recommend this unit, I chose it over competitive units for it's warranty, quality and reputation. All copper internal components, quality switches and connectors. If I were to ever build a house I would install these units in each bath and the kitchen sink instead of having a tank style heater that cycles on and off whether or not you use any hot water. I would prefer this style unit over a whole house tankless heater also, as these install right at or near the the point of use eliminating the long runs resulting in temperature drops.

This service kit is complete, well instructed, and very easy to install. I am sure it saved over $150 compared to a service call. If your gas hot water heater is less than 10 years old and you find that the pilot light will not stay lit, it is most likely the High Temperature Cutoff Switch that has gone bad. That switch is part of this kit.

decided to order this item after realising our water heater was close to 10 years old. Figured it would be easier and cheaper to install this thing than ro replace the basement carpet if the heater failed.
Fitted this in under an hour, some plumbing skills required.
works on demand (you can open/close the valve from the controller) and the sensor works with a single drop of water - though be careful where you put it, step on it and you'll break it.

These installed easily and seem very solid. I got an estimate from a contractor to install my new water heater, and they were "very proud" of their work. I'm an average DIYS person, and I did the job with some help from my son (he's good with a wrench.) These straps are reasonably priced and good quality. The screws drove in easily with no pilot hole. Too easy to install to pay someone else!!

Watts 500528 Premier Four-Chamber Tankless Electric Hot Water Heater Review

Watts 500528 Premier Four-Chamber Tankless Electric Hot Water Heater
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
My conventional water heater died and I decided to go tankless since this is a second home. The price was quite a bit higher than a replacement tank heater, but since I use very little hot water it seemed like a good fit.
The first thing that I ran into was the electric requirements. This thing has four 7000W heating elements and each one requires a separate 30A 240V circuit. Since I didn't have that much room in my service panel, I had to install a 125A sub-panel. This also required pulling four 10-2 cables through the attic and into the utility room. Given the price of copper, this is not an insignificant expense. If I had it to do all over again, I might have moved the water heater closer to the service panel.
The actual pluming was pretty easy. It works just like a regular water heater with 3/4 inch inlet and outlet. The specifications say that a blowoff valve is not required, so I did not install one.
I am a little upset by the design of this thing. The pipes come in from the top and the wiring is on the side. The problem with this arrangement is that any sweating from the pipes runs down into the unit and onto the electrical wiring. I had a small leak in a connection when I first turned the water on and the water dripped down onto the circuit board in the unit. Fortunately, I didn't have the power on yet, but it did take a bit of work to dry everything out. I would have much preferred that the water connection would have been on the bottom and the electricity on the top.
When I powered the unit up, there were a number of clicks and beeps and flashing LEDs. The unit quickly settled down into a constant blinking of a single green LED. The very limited manual indicated that this was the normal operating mode. After a few small tests at the kitchen sink, I was satisfied that the unit was working, so I decided to take a shower.
Everything worked fine and the water was plenty hot enough. As a matter of fact, I will probably turn the temperature down a bit from the factory setting. One issue that I have is that when any of the four elements turn on it causes my lights to flicker slightly. This is a common problem since this also happens with any large electrical load like the heat pump or hot tub. The issue is that the elements seem to be turning on and off constantly during the shower causing a lot of flickering. This is something that I guess I will have to live with.
I only have a 200A service into my house and this is the minimum recommended for this unit. It will be interesting to see how well the power holds up when I have the heat pump, hot tub, and a shower all going at the same time. I probably ought to turn on all the burners on the stove at the same time just to really give it a shakedown.
The only other issue that I have is the apparent lack of information on this unit. I don't believe that the manufacturer has any useful web site or customer support. The manuals that come with the unit are very limited in information. With the unit powered on and idle, there are periodic relay clicks that I assume are normal, but nothing is mentioned in the manual. I am guessing that this is some sort of diagnostics, but I am not really sure.
Over all, I probably would not replace a conventional water heater with this unit again. Given the total cost and time involved, I cannot see that I will ever come close to recovering the investment. I am a technology junkie and like to try new things, so the experience is worth something I guess.

Bosch 1000P NG AquaStar 2-3/5 GPM Indoor Tankless Gas Water Heater Review

Bosch 1000P NG AquaStar 2-3/5 GPM Indoor Tankless Gas Water Heater
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Just self-installed my 1000 P NG water heater I got from Amazon (1-week shipping was free). Took me a day (soldering copper pipe is not very easy for me). I replaced a 40-gallon tank unit. I live in a small beach house in Southern Califoria and needed to replace my 1997 tank unit and since the Bosch was actually less than a tank unit and I could gain much needed floor space, I gave it a try. After replacing my existing 3" venting with 4" double-wall, the total insatlled price was a little more than if I had bought another tank unit. This unit has a "234 therms/year" government rating versus "263" for the tank unit it replaced (so I don't expect to save much on my gas bill). I had researched tank-less water heaters and this Bosch unit does not require stainless steel venting which saves a lot of money over galvanized. As with all units I have read about, it's limitation is that you must use at least 1/2 GPM of hot water in order to get the unit to fire-up (no more trickle of hot water during shaving). The quality of the unit was OK-the drip pan must be user installed and requires modification to work, and the front cover was bent somewhat and makes adjustements in gas flow difficult. Read the users manual on-line before buying and you won't have any surprises. I operate the unit at it's lowest water flow setting (the right-hand knob) since this also means that the unit will fire at the lowest water flowrate. I also operate it at its lowest gas flow setting and the water is still REALLY hot, so I am not sure what all of the complaints are out there about luke warm water. Bosch states that every 2+ years, preventative maintenance is required (something not required with a tank unit), so keep that in mind before buying.
I'll right another review after a year or so, or, earlier if I have problems.

I have been researching purchasing a point of use water heater for quite some time. I needed one in my kitchen to provide hot water to the kitchen sink and dish washer. After many searches I decided on this unit based on it description and installation instructions. It is very small that does not take up any space compared to a tank heater.
I was able to install the unit quickly and it worked great the first time out. It was easy to adjust the water temperature and leaves allot of room under the sink for storage. This is a 240 unit and requires at 30amp breaker.
I would recommend this unit to anyone and might purchase another in the future. Customer Service is very professional and responded quickly to some questions that I had.

Aqua-Pure AP431 Hot Water System Protector Replacement Cartridge Review

Aqua-Pure AP431 Hot Water System Protector Replacement Cartridge
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I think this hardwater prevention cartridge works. I have read that it is a must for people who have tankless water heaters, who don't also have water softeners. Personally, I think you should buy a water softner over this device if you can afford it and are okay maintaining it. That said, I am using this device on the water line flowing into my water heater. I also have a hot water filter [...]) on the outlet side of the water heater to catch the stuff released into the water heater. That filter catches a lot of slimy rust and hardward. The only issue is that I need to change the filter quarterly. However, the aqua-pure seems to last six months. Overall, I think this is a good product, but you have to get it installed or install it yourself. Then, you probably want to filter the other side. I think a water softner (Morton Salt #MSD34C 34M Water Softener Unit) would work better, but this solution is less expensive to purchase and maintain.
